The absolute monocyte count measures circulating monocytes, which migrate into tissues and become macrophages and dendritic cells. NHANES reports both a percent of total WBC and an absolute count; this page uses the absolute count in 1000 cells/uL, consistent with the rest of the CBC panel. Monocyte counts rise in chronic inflammation and certain infections. The percent-of-WBC distribution is also shown: the share of total white cells that are monocytes, from the NHANES monocyte percent variable.

What is the role of monocytes?
Monocytes circulate briefly, then enter tissues and differentiate into macrophages and dendritic cells. They clear pathogens and cellular debris and present antigens to the adaptive immune system, linking innate and adaptive immunity.
Why is the monocyte count relatively small?
Monocytes are a minor fraction of circulating white cells (typically a few percent), so the absolute count is low compared with neutrophils and lymphocytes. The distribution is correspondingly narrow in absolute terms.
Why are these population percentiles, not clinical reference ranges?
